This website, Cassowary Trail, is the “World’s First Cassowary Art Trail” and is built with Airtable and Softr.
Their very worthy mission is:
The Southern Cassowary is an endangered species. With the Art Trail we would like to create a better awareness of protecting the bird and support conservation projects. Local artists paint real size cassowary statues which are set up in the public as a trail, first set up 2022 in Kuranda and ongoing expanding in Tropical North Queensland Australia.
This project is in collaboration with Kuranda Conservation Community Nursery Inc
The site had to be completed on a tight budget, as it is a volunteer organisation.
We used Airtable and Softr to build this website.
This is an alternative to building in WordPress. Airtable is the database backend, and Softr is the public website.
They do all the updates in Airtable, making it simple and easy for them to use. We were able to use a free version of Airtable and a free version of Softr for this site.
The site had to be easy to update and maintain, and using the combination of Softr and Airtable means that all the updates are actually done in Airtable, and then they immediately flow through to the relevant spot on the Softr front end. Jurg, the founder of the organisation, was happy to use Airtable to do the updates.
He found it a lot simpler and easier to use than WordPress. They also thought, and I agree, that it would be easier to train someone else to update this as the project grows.
We used a free version of Softr and a free version of Airtable to do this. We didn’t have to pay for either because it was a fairly simple site, which again saves costs. We’ve incorporated a donations page using Stripe payments so people can donate via the website to the organisation, which is really important for the organisation.
Using Stripe payments meant we didn’t have to worry about the expense and complications of a separate shopping cart plugin – more time and expense savings.
The website is clean and loads very quickly and is expandable relatively easily as the project grows. They can easily add, there are quite a few videos they have to showcase what they’ve done so far with these cassowary artworks, and it’s very easy to add the videos in Airtable, just the YouTube video URL, and that adds it immediately into, you just add the YouTube video URL into Airtable and that instantly updates it in Softer in the front end of the website, the front end website.
Jurg is very pleased with how it looks and how easy it is for him to update it when necessary.
I use the Softr—Airtable combination for a few websites now. A single Softr account can be used for external, public-facing websites as well as internal apps.

I wouldn’t recommend starting with a paid version of Softr – the free version has quite extensive features.
